Each year, on 3 March, we celebrate World Wildlife Day, an occasion recognised by the United Nations to honour the significance of our planet's diverse wildlife. At Australian Mutual Bank, we join the global community in acknowledging the pivotal role that native animals play in preserving biodiversity and maintaining ecological balance.
This year, our focus turns to the preservation of koala habitats, a cherished symbol of Australia's unique wildlife and an animal close to our hearts. Through our partnership with Greenfleet, we are proud to contribute to the protection and restoration of these vital ecosystems.
Greenfleet is a renowned not-for-profit environmental organisation protecting our climate by restoring our forests. They plant native biodiverse forests to capture carbon emissions and help fight the impacts of climate change. Since 1997, they have planted over 10.8 million trees across 550 forests in Australia and New Zealand. As they grow, these forests absorb carbon, improve soil and water quality, and restore habitat for native wildlife, including many endangered species.
Greenfleet's reforestation initiatives resulted in the establishment of 493 hectares of new koala habitat in 2023, safeguarded for generations to come. Since 2021, their efforts have seen the restoration of nearly 1,000 hectares of koala habitat, providing essential food and shelter for these iconic animals. In 2023, Australian Mutual Bank has contributed to the restoration of native forests and ecosystems, which provide crucial habitat for endangered wildlife, by offsetting 686 tonnes of CO2 with Greenfleet. Greenfleet will plant enough biodiverse native trees on Australian Mutual Bank’s behalf to offset these emissions.
As we celebrate World Wildlife Day, we reaffirm our commitment to being The Ethical Alternative and protecting our planet's rich biodiversity. Together, through collaborative efforts and unwavering dedication, we can ensure a sustainable future for generations to come.
